Welcome to Economics 102, Microeconomic Principles, Spring Semester, 2001. This course is sponsored by the Discovery Program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and limited to twenty-two freshmen or first year students. Students learn the basics of supply and demand, consumer behavior and decision-making, firm behavior, and market structure in a hands-on environment where learning by doing is emphasized. An on-line lab lets students explore opportunities for learning economics on the Internet. Applications of the material to current-day economic problems such as welfare and health care reform, environmental problems, emerging market economies, and problems of world trade are an important part of the course.
